Angkor Wat is a magnificent temple complex in Cambodia, which is considered to be a national treasure and is an iconic symbol for Cambodians. Originally constructed for King Suryavarman II in the 12th century to function as his capital and state temple, it is the best preserved building at the location. It is also the only shrine to have retained its religious function over the years, first as a Hindu temple devoted to Vishnu and subsequently as a Theravada Buddhist centre. The temple is considered to be the best remaining example of the high classical Khmer architecture.
The silk industry holds a central position in Cambodian craftsmanship, and the Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles (IKTT) holds the Silkworm Festival each year on a full moon day in September. Many individuals who earn their living from the silk industry participate in this festival.
For the silk material to be produced, the countless thousands of silkworm cocoons with the silkworms still inside them must be boiled in water. This can be considered cruel, and Cambodia being a staunchly Buddhist country, has heard voices raised against the practice. In fact villagers in far-flung areas have even refused to involve themselves in the industry. However in most cases when the value of the finished products was explained to the objectors, they have usually accepted the occupation.
The Silkworm Festival was created to commemorate the thousands of silkworms who were sacrificed by the silk industry. This festival holds a dedicated mass for the creatures and also thanks the gods of Angkor for their blessings to ensure the continued success of the silk industry.
The spirit of the festival is not entirely new as rites relating to silkworms have been found in ancient Chinese writings. There are also silkworm temples in Vietnam and Japan.
The Angkor Silk Fair is also held annually at this time, coordinated by the Cambodian Silk Forum, which includes many different players in the Cambodian silk industry. These include textile designers, companies engaged in silk production and shops retailing silk products.
