Employee Motivation: 5 Tips On How To Motivate Employees

By:

The boss sets the tone for the rest of the office staff. If your work environment is less than pleasant, there are things you can do to get the morale up and the people motivated to perform at their peak. It is up to you, the manager, to motivate the employees into being their most cooperative and productive selves. Here are five methods to help you achieve this.

1. Your mood is the gage that determines how the rest of the staff feels throughout the day. If a co-worker is having a bad day the rest of the staff can easily dismiss it from their consciousness. However when the person who is in charge is acting out or off color, then the employees in the office or other work area become strained. Keeping yourself focused and your mind in a good place can motivate others, even those who are having an otherwise rough day.

2. Have a set of rules for performance that is not fluctuating. Consistency from you will help motivate the staff because they will know what to aim for. A team needs clear, focused direction.

3. The standard recognition protocols sometime have to bent or even broken. You can make that decision on the fly. If an employee does a great job you can show your appreciation in a way they would never expect this increases motivation by letting the other employees know you are watching and that you are willing to reward good work.

4. If an employee feels undervalued you cannot motivate them no matter what you try. Share power, listen to their ideas, and talk with them about what it takes to get to hat next level make the own it and they will work harder.

5. Show them you care. People are not interested in working for the cold and aloof boss who is untouchable, or the one that seems a less than human. If the TV show, "undercover boss," has shown us anything, it is that even the boss can learn a thing or two. You have to become the boss that cares about little Johnny's first date and then you will see his mother or father become a role model employee.

Showing your staff a consistent attitude will go along way to keeping them motivated and producing above expectation. Now get out there and motivate some employees.
