Text messaging is made livelier and more colorful with emoticons. Emoticons are graphical expressions attached to the text message.

Emoticons are also called smileys. It is derived from the word emotion and icon. It is an iconic graphic expressing an emotion. It adds color to a regular text message, thereby enlivening a conversation.

Emoticons can express a feeling of happiness, sadness, anger, boredom, surprise, and a lot more. It can be created with the use of ASCII characters using an input device such as a keyboard or keypad. :-)- Another variation is by the use of the dash character to put a nose.
;-)- By replacing the colon to semi colon, it will create a winking emoticon.
0;-)- The use of number zero creates an emoticon with a halo.
8-)- Using the number eight will create an emoticon with a sunglasses.
:-(- By using the open bracket rather than the close bracket, it will create a frowning face commonly associated with the emotion of sadness.
:-D- The letter D can also be used to create the emotion of a laughing face.
:-o- This emoticon conveys the emotion of surprised. It was created by using the letter o.

The discovery of creating the :-( and :-) to symbolize emotion using the ASCII character is made by Scott Fahlman in a document at the Carnegie Mellon University in September 19, 1982. it was lost but recovered by Jeff Baird after 20 years.

The discovery has made its way until today with the existence of modern technology. Because of the fast development in mobile phone technology, the features of todays latest models allow users to send plenty of emoticons which are graphically made.

The most common emoticons are yellow colored circles with dotted black eyes. The emoticons are preset and come as a bundled feature with modern mobile phone models. With this improvement, mobile phone users can now have other options of sending emoticons besides the traditional way of using alphanumeric characters to create emoticons or smiley.
