Emergency And Back-up Boiler Hire For Schools

Emergency And Back-up Boiler Hire For Schools

By:

A boiler failure can create a logistical nightmare

Schools can not only vary in size, of course, but also in type: state primary and secondary schools, academies, prep schools, public and private schools, colleges, universities all are centres of learning, and all need an adequate supply of heat and hot water on tap.

The Department for Education requires that minimum temperatures in classrooms are specified in each school premises regulations. Eighteen degrees centigrade is normal for classrooms. Schools, colleges and universities are not covered by any government Workplace Health & Safety Acts; it is up to school governors (and union representatives on the teaching staff) to come to an agreement regarding a suitable minimum temperature for a school or other centre of learning.

When a boiler fails at a school in winter, the usual decision taken is to send all the pupils (and staff) home. But this is not quite as simple a solution as it sounds; the headache of notifying hundreds, if not thousands, of parents that their children need to be collected can be a logistical nightmare, as well as involving considerable expense. Contacting the same number of families during the evening about a next-day school closure can be equally exhaustive and costly.

A school Headmaster or Headmistress could remove this problem in just one phone call, however. By contacting a specialist boiler rental company that operates an emergency call-out, 24/7 service, a school can have a suitable mobile boiler delivered, situated and running, quickly and without fuss. A school can continue with little or no interruption, and can enjoy having the same amount of heat and hot water as normal. A specialist boiler hire company can also formulate a tailored contingency plan for a school, with a site visit and survey being the first step in the plans formulation.

Hiring boilers for schools while the installed boiler is being replaced

It is not only during an emergency at a school that a boiler hire specialist may be called upon; many schools may need to undertake routine maintenance or replacement work on their boiler and if this needs to take place during term time then a rented portable boiler can be used. That means the school can carry on as normal, with no disruption whatsoever to heat and hot water provision.

Types of rented boilers used in schools

The type of portable boiler chosen will depend upon the size of the school and also factors such as: the number of radiators; wash basins; showers; and kitchen, art classroom and chemistry classroom sinks, etc., on the school premises. For a large UK school with up to 2000 pupils, the total heating/hot water requirement is usually at 400kW, meaning a hired mobile 500kW packaged boiler (plus 2000-litre fuel tank, hoses and fittings) would be the ideal rented boiler set-up required in the event of an installed boiler failure.

With the news in April this year that the National School Rebuilding Programme (established by the Labour Government in 2004) is to be axed, many schools plans to replace their boilers will have been quashed. Therefore, increasing numbers of schools may be facing the very real prospect of unplanned closure due to boiler failure, unless they put contingency plans in place to hire replacement equipment as and when necessary.
