Emergence Of Broadband Over Dial-ups

By:

In the early 90s, when the Internet first came into existence, the only available connection was a dial up modem. The connection was sluggish and unmanageable, but still allowed searching millions of sites and meeting different people around the globe. However, it required connectivity with your home phone and just when you would be in the middle of an online conversation with someone, somebody in your house may need to use the phone. This created a hassle as you are connected to the internet via the only phone line in the house and they would either need to wait for your conversation to end or get you disconnected. With a connection as slow as a dial-up, downloading any file beyond ten megabytes would take awfully long and anything larger than that would take a decade!

Now, lets sweep forward ten years to the year 2000. This is around the time when broadband placed an important step in the online world. It came in highly affordable rates, and was even offered below the cost of dial up by some companies. If you think broadband is unavailable in your area, well, think again! The accessibility of broadband is rapidly increasing. You may also choose satellite connectivity, but a major shortcoming to it is that if there is heavy rainfall or any obstruction between you and the satellite, it can make your service slower than dial up in some cases.

A lot of phone companies offer some kind of DSL. Similarly, many cable companies offer some kind of package plan, which includes a cable internet connection. In most cases, cable is the better alternative. It has greater agility and reliability, and its speed is unaffected no matter what the distance of your connection from the main office. If you cannot get a cable connection, DSL is another good alternative. However, DSL would appear a bit slower than cable. Its speed will depend on how close your house is from the phone companys office. Thus, both DSL and cable are good options. With these upgrades in action, it is no longer impossible to download large files that are even beyond ten megabytes.

Broadband, too, comes with some shortcomings. It usually stems from the fact that the connection always stays on. Thus, it is essential for your computer to have some form of antivirus and firewall protection. Many free protections are available online. Windows XP has a built in firewall. It works fine if you don't have a better alternative. But if you can, you should always obtain a better alternative. It is very essential since your PC will at least encounter one virus while you are connected to the internet with broadband. With a good antivirus and firewall, nothing very harmful should affect your computer. Your computer may have some spyware and adware, but these can be easily removed.

Now, the question comes whether you can afford to have a broadband connection or not. Having a broadband connection will help you to use the internet in a better way. You can even start your own e-business one day and keep it running with the great connectivity of broadband.
