Embracing A Non-invasive Detection Method

By:

When women think about having a breast exam, most of them are resigned to the reality that a little bit of discomfort is necessary in order to ensure good health for the long run. The reason for that discomfort is that most women are used to manual exams and mammograms, both of which involve the body being touched, and in the case of mammograms, uncomfortably compressed. While a very helpful and necessary tool in monitoring breast health and detecting areas of concern, mammography also exposes breast tissue to radiation which is known to be undesirable in general. The more women can do to protect themselves the better off they are. This is why seeking out screening that is completely safe for breast tissue has become such an important goal for many women. Thermography is the answer to that question and even raises the bar for detection.

The reason that many doctors are so enthusiastic about thermography is that it allows for detection earlier than any other method used alone. Thermography is a thermal imaging procedure which is exactly what it sounds like: it measures heat in the body. When there is any kind of tissue growth in the body, such as you would see with a cystic growth or tumor growth, there is increased blood flow to the area and so increased heat. Once blood flow has been diverted to an area and increased the heat held in that part of the body, it can be seen using thermography. At very early stages there is no other way to examine the area, which means that for all intents and purposes, there is time for preventative care, and between preventive actions and continued monitoring, there is a chance that unhealthy changes in tissue may not continue. Obviously there are also cases wherein thermography is used to help monitor such changes until such a time that other diagnostic tools are appropriate. Thermography should absolutely be used alongside all other available tools as needed.

The experience of visiting a breast thermography center is one that is a welcome change for many women. The pre-thermogram protocol is fairly simple and calls for avoiding anything that could change body temperature right before the scan such such as lots of sun exposure, drinking caffeine, having a massage or body work done, etc. One morning without coffee or deodorant is a small thing to pay for the ease of the exam. After a short wait while body temperature adjusts to that of the room, one simply has to stand still in front of the equipment for a short period of time. Once a baseline reading has been done, it is customary to return again in a few months for another to ensure that a proper baseline has been established. From there annual exams can be done to watch for any changes in tissue health.
