Email Marketing - Should You Build Lists In Non-internet Marketing Niches?

By:

For quite a few years now the internet marketing / make money online niche has been one of the most overcrowded niches on the internet. There are endless websites devoted to this subject and everyone seems to be building an email list full of wannabe internet marketers. However is this really the most profitable email marketing strategy?

Well my view is that although there is money to be made in this niche, it is a lot of hard work. You are competing against thousands of other marketers and just getting your emails opened is a real challenge in this day and age.

Therefore I personally think that you are much better off entering much smaller niches and then building email lists within these niches. The competition in a lot of these niches is minimal so as long as you provide good quality content, you should have no problems achieving high open rates, which of course is half the battle. If you know that a high percentage of your list is actually reading your emails, then you just need to focus on finding good quality products to promote and honing your sales pitch.

The major benefit about building an email list in these smaller niches is that there may only be a handful of dominant players. Therefore even if your subscribers are subscribed to four or five other lists, you should still achieve high open rates if you offer better quality content than your competitors.

In the internet marketing niche, however, people tend to subscribe to lots of different email lists. This is not only because many people are attracted by the free bonuses that are usually offered as an incentive to join, but also because there are lots and lots of sub-niches. For instance in order to become a highly profitable online marketer, you will want to learn about a variety of subjects such as article marketing, list building, SEO, web hosting, etc.

As a result of all this, when you send out emails to these subscribers you are likely to experience extremely low open rates simply because people don't have the time to read all of their emails.

Therefore my general advice would be to forget about this overcrowded niche altogether and enter a much smaller niche where people still spend money, but the competition is greatly reduced. A highly profitable email list is one that's highly responsive, and you can best achieve this by entering a small niche and providing valuable information to your subscribers so they actually look forward to hearing from you.
