Elgin Toyota Dealer Believes Social Networking Car Will Revolutionize Driving

Apparently we arent as well-connected as we could be and Toyota is planning to do something about it. Actually, maybe this will be a safer way for Roselle Toyota dealership customers to stay social while they are on the road.
With the aid of Microsoft, Toyota is creating a social networking service that will mimic popular venues like Twitter and Facebook. The venture has been dubbed Toyota Friend and will be private for Toyota owners. Exclusive cool.
Your Elgin Toyota dealer believes this network will be very useful for drivers. One recent demonstration in Japan showed how a plug-in Prius owner was alerted through a cell phone message to recharge his car overnight.
Then, once the car was plugged in to charge he got a message with the time it would be fully charged. Very useful indeed, if not exciting. But with the popularity and production of plug-in cars growing, this is not a bad idea.
Not only can such a network give drivers a reminder about charging, but can relay real-time information about battery charge and the location of the nearest charging station, which admittedly will be more difficult to locate than your corner gas station. At least for the immediate future.
There is the option for these messages and interaction to be kept private, or shared with those on the Toyota Friend network or even on Twitter and Facebook. Customers of the Roselle Toyota dealership will certainly appreciate the diverse potential of this avenue of communication.
More than just everyday chores like charging, the network can alert drivers of the need for inspection or tune-ups and connect them with the dealer for an appointment. Pretty handy if youre like me and tend to forget and then put off such appointments.
Toyota is certainly banking on this being a hit, as the Japanese auto maker is investing about $5.5 million and Microsoft is putting up about $4.1 million, with Salesforce.com adding in $2.8 million toward the project. Since many cars are already equipped with network capability through other devices, getting this one up and running should not be as costly.
Customers of the Elgin Toyota dealer wont see this system for a while, but it will be available in Japan in 2012 and will then quickly be offered globally, with electric and plug-in vehicles getting first dibs.
Salesforce.com chief executive Marc Benioff explained how social networks can add value to products and companies. This also will allow Toyota to glean information about their buyers as well as how the car is performing.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda has always been fascinated with telematics and said, I hope cars can become friends with their users, and customers will see Toyota as a friend. He added, I want a relationship with my car in the same way we have a relationship with our friends on social networks.
