Thrissur Elephant Festival Tour to see a breathtaking parade of 30 richly caparisoned elephants at the Vadakumnathan temple in Thrissur. The festival is celebrated and devoted to the God of Destruction Lord Shiva.
The
Thrissur Pooram Festival commenced with the arrival of a small elephant procession which carried their respective deities from various temples in different villages across Thrissur and winds up at the grounds of Vadakumnathan temple.
After this the procession of around 100 caparisoned elephants begins. These elephants are lavishly decorated with sequined silk parasol, flowers, glittering gold jewelry and ornaments which heighten the charm of this soul stimulating parade.
Thefestival lasts for two days. During the two day celebrations people enjoy fireworks and colorful traditional dance performances. The
kudamattam(exchange of colorful umbrellas) rituals with the two rival temples of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady Devaswoms are other most prominent attractions of this colorful cultural celebration. These umbrellas are big in sizes and designed secretly. They make all efforts to decorate their most artistic umbrellas by spending good amount of money.
The Pooram festival is also well-known for the
majestic display of fireworks.The atmosphere is full of excitement. Local people perform several traditional dances on the loud rhythm of drums, air pipes and cymbals.
