Mangeshkar took her first music lessons from her father. She began to appear as an actress in her fathers musical plays when she was only 5. Her father died when she was only 13. Mater Vinayak, who was one of her fathers close friends, began to take care of her then and helped her start a career in dancing and acting.
Lata Mangeshkar sung her first song in the movie Kismat in 1942. In her early years of singing, Lata would make an attempt to model her voice on one of the leading singers from her time Noorjahan. However, she gave up this after couple of years and developed her own unique style which was loved by one and all.
Latas first major success came when she sang the song aayega aanewala in the film Mahal in 1949. The songs made her famous across the country.
Lata has not looked back since. Over the years, she has sung some of the memorable songs like pyar kiya to darna kya, yaara sili silli, satyam shivam sundaram, ai mere witan ke logon. The list of her evergreen hits is almost endless. Lata has worked with almost all the leading playback singers and music directors from India.

Lata has won almost every prestigious record in the field of music including national award for best female playback singer(3 times) and filmfare award for best singer(seven times).
