Electricial Contractors Delaware: Diy Or Hire?

5 Reasons to Bypass DIY and Hire an Electrical Contractor

It is time to make renovations to your electrical system. Maybe your electrical service panel needs an upgrade. Maybe you want to add an extra electrical outlet in your office. Perhaps you think it is time to upgrade the wiring throughout your house. While there are plenty of books and videos catering to the do-it-yourself mentality, there are certain things you are better off letting the pros handle, especially when it comes to your electrical system. Here are a handful of reasons why hiring electrical contractors for your home repair job may be in your best interest.

Training

An independent electrical contractor is required to participate in at least 5-7 years of apprenticeship training and educational courses before he is even allowed to work without supervision. There are not many industries within which individuals undergo that much training.

Most electrical contractors are members of trade associations as well. These organizations give them resources and educational opportunities, ensuring they are always in the know when it comes to practical or safety changes within the industry.

Changes in Code

Changes are made to electrical code laws in a regular basis. You, as a consumer, may not be familiar with the changes or new requirements. Upgrading your entire home with the wrong type of circuit breaker or a type of wire that is too thin could cause serious problems. You are not only putting your home at risk but you are also limiting your ability to sell your home later on. Your entire contract could be voided if a pre-sale inspector discovers an inappropriate or inadequate electrical system.

An independent electrical contractor is in the business of staying up to date with the most recent codes. He will make sure your job is up to par and, if not, he will be responsible for making any additional repairs caused by his negligence. You, on the other hand, will end up paying for a second set of repairs if your own first set does not live up to regulation.

Legalities

Most townships require you to have a permit before making major electrical upgrades or repairs. Most people cannot make major electrical upgrades without an assistant or two. You now have a couple of problems. If one of your buddies gets hurt while trying to help with your upgrade, you will end up having to pay for his medical bills. You may have to file a claim under your homeowners insurance policy, risking higher rates or a non-renewal of coverage.

If a neighbor notices you doing electrical work without a permit, you may be reported to the township. You will end up having to pay not only for the original permit but for the fines associated with not having one to begin with. Oh, and the township safety inspector will not exactly go easy on you when it comes time to sign off on your completed work, either.

You Do Not Have Time

A lack of knowledge combined with a feeling of urgency is the ultimate recipe for disaster. The moment your electrical outlet cover starts turning brown is not the time to run out and buy a book about home electrical repairs. There are some situations during which fast action must be taken and finding an independent electrical contractor who can make it out to your home ASAP is imperative.

The Risk of Injury or Death

Lets be blunt. You do not know what you are doing. The electrical system in your home is complex and a simple mistake could destroy the entire system, not to mention your physical body. A simple slip-up could result in electrocution, severe burns, physical or mental impairment, or even death. It is safer to simply hire a professional familiar with the ins and outs of electricity to get the job done.

We recommend consulting your electrical contractors before doing any work, even if you feel the project is simple enough to do on your own. He or she may agree and give you tips on how to effectively finish your repair but it is better to ask first than it is to make a critical and costly mistake.
