Electric Slot Cars--toys For Kids And Adults

Electric Slot Cars--toys For Kids And Adults

By:

Young boys often hope for and the lucky ones receive electric slot car racing sets for Christmas. The slot cars are actually miniature automobiles built to scale that are electric powered with low voltage electric motors.

The cars are guided down a slotted track by a hand held controller. The challenge faced by the kid driver holding the controller is to guide the electric cars around any curves in the track or around any other impediments without the cars being derailed (or leaving the track). You see, it's for kids only—ha! Older hobbyists frequently continue the "for kids only" habit of slot car racing. In fact, they often get into the hobby as deeply and thoroughly as a model railroad enthusiast would.

A person can buy intricate landscapes or design them himself. He can build his own cars and even engage in tricks in order to make the cars go faster on the track. Building a layout for a slot car racing track is actually a pretty simple idea. The hobbyist starts out with his plan on paper. When he gets all the fine details laid out on paper, he can then advance onto the physical representation of the layout.

Generally, the first item the hobbyist wants to get, after the slot car track, is a board to place it on. When he attaches the tracks and the control device to the board layout, he can then expand on his layout and work on the finer details.

A model railroad shop or website can help a person complete his layout for the electric slot cars. Also, lights, buildings, water towers, tunnels and other items can give a slot car racer the details that he is looking for in the scene. While many people are completely satisfied with using pre-cut models which they can purchase in order to put their layout together, this definitely does not work for everyone. There are many slot car racers who like to get their hands dirty and who want to build all of the models themselves. This will include trees, grass, towers, tunnels and other things as needed. Even the train track itself, for a person so inclined and skilled, can easily be added to the self-built slot car layout.

Although "playing" with electric slot cars often involves racing tournaments and racing against friends, it should always be remembered that the primary purpose of the cars is having lots of fun.
