Electric Crotch Rockets

While the public has been inundated by reports and advertisements about the marvels of the electric car, a particular niche market has remained quite low key and steady in propelling itself to a greater presence in the green transport revolution. These are electric bicycles or more commonly known as the e-bike.

In essence, an e-bike is a bicycle that uses an electric motor to propel the vehicle. These kinds of transports cost often between US$500 and US$3,000 and run on rechargeable batteries. The e-bike can attain a top speed of 20 miles per hour. In many areas of the world, these modes of transportation are already replacing motorcycles and traditional bicycles for those who want to travel with the wind in their hair.

There is a growing conundrum regarding electric bicycles as to their official designation. They are most often classified as bicycles instead of motorized vehicles and this in turn allows them more leeway regarding certifications and areas of operation. In other areas, e-bikes are considered as a specific vehicle classification and thus specific rules and guidelines apply.

There are many types and configurations of the electric motorized bicycles using different platforms. As such, the complexity of the configuration increases the cost especially in the use of direct-drive and geared motors. One popular configuration is the pedal assisted bike that uses the pedal power of the individual to charge the battery. Another one is an electric power assist system that uses a drive chain, belt drive, hub or friction drive motors to power the e-bike.

Another aspect of e-bikes is the use of batteries. Often, many configurations utilize rechargeable batteries, such as lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride and Lithium Ion batteries. The type of configuration and battery uses effectively affects the overall range of the bicycle. The standard bicycle platform is able to go between seven kilometers uphill using its battery power or seventy kilometers on flat road with minimum assistance.

There has been tremendous growth in the use of these kinds of electrified transports worldwide. The largest number of e-bikes can be found in China while other countries such as India, the United States, Switzerland and the Netherlands have indicated significant figures in both production and usage of electric bicycles. Being zero emission vehicles, these electric crotch rockets can definitely have a lower environmental impact compared to standard motorized scooters and motorcycles. They are also seen be helpful in alleviating urban issues such as space considerations for parking and traffic. Furthermore, the specific pedal electric assist design can also provide health benefits for the individual user aside from being environmentally friendly.
