The eldercare caregiver's commitment to caring for their aging loved one can be a long term and unpredictable one. Caregiver stress comes from expectations of others and disappointments.

Caring for your aging loved one is a way of showing your love and appreciation. It makes us feel good to care for another. Caring for another gives a us a sense of belonging, a sense of well being and self worth. So why does something that should be beneficial, leave you feeling physically, emotionally drained and stressed out?

Do we care too much?

As a caregiver, we count on those around us to support and assist us when we need it. Often, those that we have grown up with may even be very close to, are the very individuals that hurt and disappoint us. Family dynamics can disintegrate at this stressful time.

Often the very person we are caring for is the cause of our stress. Many caregivers often mistake constant worrying, attention and obsessing about their aging loved one as part of caring. These very unhealthy habits of worry and obsession actually lead to anxiety, stress, and fatigue. When your energy is drained and you realize that you are overly attached to your aging loved one, anger, resentment and depression set in. You loose balance in your life.

Do you worry and loose sleep over the family arguments about your loved one?

Are you frazzled and worried that you cannot provide the care you feel your loved one needs?

Caring too much is not the cause of your stress. It is how you manage your caring. Solutions to the problems of caregiving and family dynamics do not come from stress, worry and anxiety. Solutions to the problems of care giving come from balance and being able to remain resilient under duress.

Caregiver stress comes in many forms. Headaches, back aches, frequent colds, high blood pressure and upset stomach are just a few stress related health conditions that develop from stress.

Eldercare and caregiver stress can be overcome. You must first understand that as a result of your perception of caring too much is to identify your unhealthy habits and acknowledge them. Take time to learn techniques and habits that will help you alleviate your stress, worry and anxiety. You can overcome caregiver stress and have balance and positive energy to continue caring for your aging loved one.
