Remember that swimming is a form of exercise, and just like with any exercise, you should warm up first. Loosening up your muscles and getting your blood pumping are crucial before you start your open-water swim. Apart from warming up, you should also remember to stay on course. Look for a target in the distance to aim for, and make sure that this target is something that is unique, visible, and stationary. Otherwise, you may find yourself swimming out to sea and getting lost.
Once you find your target, breathe by lifting your head up and back and looking forward. Put your face back in the water and take your breath to the side as you normally would. During the course of your training, you should try to practice bilateral breathing. Learn how to breathe to the right and to the left. Also, learn how to breathe in rough conditions. You should be able to know how to modify your stroke and your breathing when the conditions become challenging like when the waves are big. As for things that you should not do during your open swim, do not panic and do not swim alone.
Now if you want to perform some drills for open water swimming, you can try blind swimming. Swim normal freestyle with your eyes completely shut, and then raise your head straight forward and sight on an object off in the distance on every fifth stroke.
