Efficient Water Heaters Provides Adequate Hot Water Supply

By:

Basically, a professional is not required to perform basic maintenance since the homeowner can do the task himself/herself. Here are some useful pointers on how to keep your water heater in good condition:

Substances such as iron and magnesium sulphate can build-up after some time so it"s best to clean your heating tank once in a while. To do this, you need to shut down the water supply and drain the tank. Then, you"ll need to scrape off the dirt found inside the tank using a brush, a pair of pliers and a garden hose.

Once you"re finished with scraping of the dirt, use the garden hose to flush the dirt out the tank. Do this a few times until you see that the water flowing out clear. It would be best to clean the tank as regular as every one to three years; it depends on the model of the device and the water source. If you get mostly hard water from your supply, you may have to perform sediment clean-up more frequently.

Anode rods are usually of the same length as the heater itself. These should also be inspected regularly to see if corrosion has occurred. There are times when you may not be able to pull the entire rod out to check, but it is mostly enough to look at the topmost part of the rod and ensure that it is free of flaking and that the core wire is undamaged. If something"s wrong, you should consider changing the anode rod. When selecting a replacement, its best to buy a rod that is slightly taller than your water heater. If needed, saw-off the excess part so that it would fit during installation.

There are some models which have longer warranty periods. This may be caused by the manufacturer installing a second anode rod. These devices have one rod on top of the tank and another one on the hot water outlet. Even if your heater model has only one rod, you can still install another one at the time of service. This option is more effective in prolonging the life of your device rather than buying a replacement rod once it gets damaged.

There may be instances wherein you notice a foul odor coming from the water in your tank. You can easily deal with this by performing cleaning as how it was discussed earlier. Just add about a gallon of bleach and fill up the tank with cold water. Let the solution settle for a while to kill the bacteria causing the foul smell, and then completely flush out the solution by running hot water then cold water through the tank.

If you are not familiar with the device, it would be best to not attempt doing cleaning and maintenance on the tank yourself. Seek the help of a professional to prevent any damage to the device like electrical problems or gas explosions from improper restarting of equipment. An efficient water heater can deliver adequate supply of hot water to your home if the device itself has been properly cleaned and maintained on a regular schedule.
