By:

Oftentimes, your pet dogs will be sprayed by skunks. And as the concerned pet owners, you would want to eliminate the skunk smell from your dogs immediately. However, there are no easy and simple tricks that could totally eliminate the odor simultaneously and immediately, but there are some tricks to reduce your dogs skunk odor quickly and easily.

When your dogs are sprayed by skunk, dont waste your time on bathing your pet dog with tomato juice because, believe it or not, it never works. People used to believe that that the tomatos citric acid helps reduce the skunk odor but it never had and never will, it will only result to a pinkish color. The most important fact to remember whenever your dog has been skunked is to avoid the dog from getting wet. When you bathe the dog immediately, it will only spread the skunk oil from his or her fur and deep through his skin.

In the process of reducing skunk smell, always bear in mind that time is of the essence. The sooner youll remedy the odor, the better. There are certain products that prove to be effective in skunk spray removal when your pet hasnt been skunked very long. You can use a mint flavored mouthwash and apply it directly into the skunked area. You must avoid eyes, ears and other mucous membranes. Let the mouthwash set for 10 minutes while massaging the sprayed area. Dont rinse afterwards.

Then you can use a special shampoo solution, in a bowl mix one and a half cups of baking soda, 2 quarts of hydrogen peroxide and 2 teaspoonful of dish soap. With the mouthwash still on the dog, its now time to shampoo you dog with this special shampoo solution. Apply the shampoo and massage it to the dogs fur thoroughly, let it stay for about 5-10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

This treatment doesnt eliminate the odor a hundred percent, but will help reduce the skunk smell out of your dog. You can also bathe the dog again to remove any residue from the solution using the regular dog shampoo.
