Effective Branding Is Much More Than Expensive Advertising

By:

Successful business branding is an ongoing effort that involves much more than advertising in major venues such as TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, and internet. In fact, those venues may be important for introducing a brand and defining it to a certain extent, but they are not enough to keep that brand in front of the faces and fresh in the minds of customers and potential customers where it needs to be. This is why promotional items are so popular and successful. These are items that people carry around with them, take into their homes to use where customers will consciously or unconsciously be exposed to that brand day after day until it is locked into their brains.

Branding is also more than just planting a name and product or service in the brains of potential customers. It is also telling a story and establishing an image. Depending on the product or service, that image may be one of refinement and elegance or it can be fun and casual, but the "feeling" or the emotional content is needed for a branding effort to have the impact intended. It also needs to match or line up with the total marketing plan for the greatest positive perception.

For instance, a cheap, cheesy plastic pen will likely not be the ideal way to add to the brand of a fine Jaguar automobile dealership. However, a custom beverage napkin with the dealership logo offered with a cup of coffee in the waiting area will make a definitive statement of style and class that will be noted and remembered and will have done so at a small fraction of the cost.

It is a proven marketing technique that repetition is a component of successful branding. Seeing a business name and logo frequently and on unexpected places is very effective advertising. Returning to the example of the custom napkins in the Jaguar dealership, there is a surprise element there, something that is unexpected. Just getting a napkin at all with a cup of coffee in most businesses is unexpected. Having one imprinted with the logo goes a step further with the added subtle but powerful demonstration of a great attention to detail. This furthers the image of caring about customers along with a willingness to go the extra distance in an exceptional way to set the business apart from the competition.

Effective branding requires more of that attention to detail and creativity than it does to expensive advertising. In fact, the most effective advertising cannot be bought at all and that is word of mouth advertising. That has to be earned by exceeding expectations.
