Effect Of Numbers On People's Lives

By:

The numbers are very important in people's lives because they are widely used in every corner of life. They can keep things in order, and sometimes avoid unnecessary repetition. Numbers are so important that a child is usually taught to count just after they can call their mum and dad. From the universally-used Arabic numbers, people can easily tell how significant numbers are. Numbers can represent rank, order, quantify, dates and sometimes they are just symbols without any meaning. From the philosophers' point of view, numbers might have come into being with the emergence of private ownership and the development of social productivity, when there was surplus. It was necessary to count and rank. Nowadays, numbers are used in hi-tech products such as computers and modern digitalized home appliances. Numbers have played a very important role in human history and will still play a significant role in modern life.

Numbers can be found almost everywhere. We all have an identity card number and a student number. We use numbers when marking the price of goods, when we tell others how old we are or what time it is and when we measure something. Our telephone calls, zip codes, bank account passwords and so on are all made up of numbers. Even prisoners get a number to be his "name" in jail. Numbers are especially important in filing. If you go into the library, you may discover all the books are numbered according to certain rules, so that finding a book in the books in the sea of books won't be too irritating. Filing is not easy, but numbers play a critical role in it. It is really countless and hard to list all of ways people use numbers.

Pronunciation determines people's preference to certain numbers. For example, double sixes "66" are very lucky in China because it sounds like "everything goes well", and the same with number "8" which means making a good fortune. "9" and "/jiu/" are homophonous, so "9" is especially popular with couples who want to express their love, and "9", "99", "999" roses are favorite gifts of many young people. Therefore, cell-phone numbers with the so-called lucky numbers tend to be priced higher than those with unlucky numbers. It seems a little bit superstitious, but this is the tradition, and it reflects people's wish for better things.

Language is the carrier of culture and linguistics signs have been stamped with cultural messages with time going on. These messages are related to all aspects of culture ranging from custom, language, to religion.
