Educating Small Business Owners About Internet Marketing

By:

There are many local business owners who are settling for performance from their business that is much less than they could achieve if they were to execute a proper internet marketing campaign. The problem is that most small business owners don't realize just how much they might stand to gain by marketing a business online. Many don't realize that, even if they don't run an online based business, there is much to be gained by marketing local business online. They can gain customers from their area and drive traffic, not just to a website, but to their doors using the internet.

Unless they happen to be in a technology based field, most small business owners only have a vague idea of what the internet can offer them. They probably have a website up and use email regularly, as do most business owners today, but aren't exploiting the internet to actually drive more business to their company. This is where they need to be educated.

There are several things that small business owners need to be taught about. One of the most important areas they should learn about is local search. Many people use the internet to find companies that they are going to do business with. Even if they plan to do that business by actually going to a store in person, they still use the internet to find that business in the first place. Putting a strong emphasis on local SEO can actually mean a lot more people coming through the doors of any small business.

Local business owners need to be taught that there are very simple things that they can do, with relatively little to no internet expertise, which can help them rank better in local searches. Simple activities, like getting a business listed in a yellow pages directory, can help in this regard. Also, the importance of claiming local business listings, such as those in Google, needs to be enforced to small business owners.

Another non-technical element of the internet that is easy to learn and which can help small business owners greatly market their business is the social aspect of the internet. Anyone can learn to use tools like Twitter and Facebook in a very short amount of time. These are both extremely powerful tools, because they can quickly and easily connect a company to thousands of potential customers through the social networks. Small business owners need to learn that they need a Facebook and Twitter presence, and that by letting their existing customers know about those pages they can quickly grow a larger audience online.

Once small business owners see that there are simple things that they can do themselves online to gather more business, they may start looking into other, more complex options involving online marketing. This is when they may start to explore the gains they can make by using a proper SEO firm, which are huge. The first step though, is making those small business owners realize how much profit they stand to gain by executing a proper internet marketing campaign.
