Edmonton Entrepreneur Turned Philanthropist Jesse Willms Supports The Bissell Centre

Jesse Willms today announced that he is expanding his ongoing philanthropic efforts with a $10,000 donation to the Edmonton-based Bissell Centre. He also said that he plans to continue to donate an additional $10,000 a month to the local nonprofit for the foreseeable future.

"I've been spending a lot of time lately helping global anti-poverty organizations," Willms said. "Now, I decided it was time to help out a group that serves my local community. Everyone should do what they can to help their neighbors live better lives.

Who Is Jesse Willms?

Jesse Willms grew up in Alberta, where he started his first business in his basement when he was 16 years old. Over the course of the next six years, he managed to build that business into a multimillion-dollar operation that has over 250 employees.

This summer, he heard Bill Gates and Warren Buffett challenge successful entrepreneurs to give back some of their money into order to help the global community. Since then, he has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a wide variety of organizations including World Vision, the YMCA, the Kiva Foundation and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Canada.

He says he plans to continue to find new local and international charities to support particularly those that help women and children.

What Is The Bissell Centre?

The Bissell Centre was started 100 years ago in order to inspire Edmonton residents to help out their neighbors. At first they focused on helping the Ukrainian immigrant community to assimilate. Over the years, they have branched out and now help any Edmonton resident who faces the blight of poverty.

If you are homeless, they try to find you a safe place to live. While you are still on the street, they offer clean showers, toilets and laundry facilities as well as a safe community center for social activities or to read books and watch movies.

If you are unemployed they will work to match you with companies looking for day labor. Along the way, they will provide you with training programs that teach basic job skills so you can eventually get a full-time job.

They have a particularly successful program for young mothers who have never been a part of the workforce, but who want to become employed so as to provide a better life for their children. A common giveaway is packages full of diapers, formula and information on being a new mom!
