Edible Gardens For Healthy Lifestyle And Security

Will you agree with me if I said that having a well maintained garden in the backyard of your house can help you keep your home safe from burglars? Strange as it may sound to you, but nevertheless they do help you maintain home security as well. But I am not saying that you do away with the ADT Home Security System that most homes have nowadays. I was only suggesting that a well kept garden around your home is a sign that the house is always occupied, and that is enough reason to deter even the hardest of criminals from trespassing on your property.

Let's get back to gardening; that is the reason why we are here anyway. Gardening is a paying hobby for many, especially for the non-working women folk; it recreates, helps you save money on vegetables and fruits, and is generally a healthier proposition if you are particular about including a lot of organically grown edible fruits and vegetable. If you thought that you need a great expanse of land to cultivate fruits and vegetable to meet your family's requirement then you are mistaken. Even a few hundred square feet of land in the backyard is all that you need to get a regular supply for your family.

What to grow and when to grow a particular vegetable or fruit is a matter of personal preference and the climatic conditions peculiar to your place. The best place to get answers for the many questions you may have is the agricultural department in your area. They can advise you to choose the right vegetable or fruit that will fit perfectly to the soil of your backyard, and even the manure you will need to use.

Whatever vegetables or fruits that you may want to grow, getting quality seeds is important. You can buy that from a seed store, there are plenty of them, or if a little computer savvy try procuring it online. The most important thing you need to understand before you order you supplies is, see if they have been certified by the concerned department. Certified seeds ensure that you get optimum yield of the best quality free from diseases and infections. There are even some plants that can substitute for manure and prevent infection to the fruits and vegetables that you will grow. Nature does it that way, and why not you too.

There are some basic tools that you cannot avoid buying if you are new to having an edible garden. The most basic of all is a shovel to prepare the ground. Soil needs to be aerated, that is giving the soil a rich supply of oxygen which is so important for the roots, and an ill ventilated soil means stunted plant grow and a poor yield. The other tools that you may want to buy are: water hoses, forks, leaf blowers, vacuum pumps, shredders, knives, pick axesetc.

Plants need plenty of sunshine, so try planting the saplings some distance away from your house building. If you don't know the right place then all that you will have to do is watch the area around your house on a sunny day and mark the appropriate place, simple as that. Some plants do better in shades as well, so you can plant them even where you expect only partial sunlight. It all depends on what you will be planting.

If you are worried about the kind of diseases that are a possibility in your area, the best thing that you can do is talk to an enthusiastic edible gardener around. They should be able to tell you everything; from soil condition to the amount of water you need to spare, and even how much money you can save from a home edible garden.
