Ecommerce Hosting: Websites And Shopping Carts

By: jason ciment

When you're just getting started, you need to keep a few things in mind about ecommerce hosting. A poorly selected ecommerce hosting solution can doom an online business before it ever gets off the ground. Your host is the equivalent of a physical store's location, and should be chosen just as carefully.

The online businessman should have a clear understanding of his business model before he decides on a internet service provider. A high bandwidth, stable connection provided by a reliable host is a must for a high traffic volume. Where as, this may not be required for an ecommerce website, that does not attract high traffic.

A physical store needs to make it easy for customers to pay for their purchases. Online stores also need reliable ways to collect payment from their customers. Many payment gateways are now available online, some of which have a track record dating back for several years. Since reliability is vital when it comes to collecting money, these should be strongly considered.

An ideal ecommerce website is one that helps a customer make payments in one go for all the items selected by him to be purchased. For this purpose, a tool that records each item checked by the customer and stores it in memory is essential. Otherwise, if the customer had to make payments for each online purchase individually, it would be too cumbersome and would dissuade the customer from doing any online purchase.

In order to club all the purchases made and enable a customer to make a single, bulk payment for them, a virtual shopping cart is required that can store each item checked for purchase in its memory. These shopping carts are already available online for the businessman to choose from, some of them even being offered for free. A person who wishes to do business online needs to go through some of these and come up with a user-friendly shopping cart, offering features to suit his business needs.

Hosting a shopping cart is similar to hosting a website. The shopping cart's software is on a server that cooperates with the server hosting the website. Generally, the two are very easy to integrate. This means that the reliability of the shopping cart hosting solution must be as good as that for the ecommerce hosting solution.
