Eco-friendly And Quirky People Tree | Ahmedabad

What you see Tucked in a secluded area where not many people would notice it at first glance, People Tree store, though small, entices you with its unusual name. Opposite AMA, located beside a paan parlor, it is likely to be mistaken for yet another run-of-the-mill boutique. But it is not. You realize this soon enough.

What you get People Tree in Ahmedabad is a franchise of the Delhi-based design studio and shop by the same name. The Ahmedabad one is run by an NID graduate. The brand was started by a group of designers and artists in 1991.

The store in Ahmedabad is a small one with every available space utilized well. The collections are hand-woven and handcrafted, mostly from recycled materials. In fact, many have been made by street children and womens groups during workshops held by People Tree.

Cloth bags with interesting designs and prints are hung in one corner. Torn cloth pieces stitched together along with bold patterns and colors, give these bags a Bohemian look. Sling bags, handbags made of jute using crochet technique, satchels, shopping bags with cane handles and reversible bags are also available. Pouches (made of wool, jute), purses and wallets (made of cloth, jute) with block prints, buttons, ribbons and so on also find a place in the shelves. Then they have wallets made of rubber and cloth (Rs. 500). Cloth belts in a riot of colors and patterns are cool too.

Cotton straps for wrist watches, wrist bands, small pouch for coins, key ring pouch, neckpieces made of leather thongs (Rs. 150) or black waxed thread, colorful bangles (Rs. 20 for each pair), bracelets and finger rings are also there. We liked the chains made of copper wire with 1 rupee coin as pendant. Other collections include anklets (of glass beads and threads), ornamental hair accessories and earrings (Rs. 100) in shapes of snakes, butterflies and dragonflies. Most of the products are made of shells, thread, stones, glass beads, seeds, ball bearings, rolled paper and the like.

In clothes, there are printed T-shirts (Rs. 200) featuring a wide range of topics like Sufi poetry, social causes, street art, quotes and comments on consumerism, women empowerment, human rights, mythology, travel and so on. There are T-shirts with graphics, logos and motifs too. Shorts, cotton pants, sarongs, skirts and wraparounds are also available.

Other accessories worth a look are hand knitted scarves, knitted caps and block-printed stoles in bright colors and quirky designs. They even have kurtas and sleeveless tops with batik patterns and natural dyes.

People Tree deals in books and stationery too. Theres a limited collection of books on travel, history and philosophy apart from colorful pencils, cloth bound notebooks with handmade paper and handmade bookmarks (Rs. 20) with interesting messages. A cloth pouch in a paper bag made of newspaper acts as a shopping bag.

Our verdict People Tree is something that was missing in Ahmedabad since long. It is for those who love funky, quirky and interesting designs with an arty and eco-friendly touch. The store is small and the collection limited, but you will need time to browse through. The accessories are mind-blowing. The clothing section is only for T-shirt lovers. Prices are little over-the-top for certain products; perhaps for their uniqueness. A great place to pick up gifts, though mostly for women. Also, if you have any interesting design or collection, People Tree is open to using in their store. The service is warm, patient and down-to-earth. Credit cards are accepted. Parking space is inadequate.
