Zero VOCs does not mean that the product is entirely free of VOCs. Of course these eco friendly paints still contain VOCs but only at a safe level.

The acceptable level of volatile organic compounds is five to ten grams per liter. Beyond this, your health will be at risk when using paints with such contents, and it will also be harmful to the environment.

There are three categories of eco friendly paints natural paints, zero VOC and low VOC. Natural eco friendly paints are made up of raw materials, such as plant oils, water, resins, plant dyes and essential oils. Others are made up of natural minerals like clay, chalk, talcum, milk protein and others.

Materials that give painted surfaces an authentic period look are lime and milk paints.

These are often used in projects that involve the restoration of antiques. Paint thickeners are made from chalks and paint solvents are made from pine trees. Natural eco friendly paints are safe for the health since these do not have harmful fumes.

This is also safe for those who have allergies and are sensitive to chemical paints. Natural paints are also environmental friendly since these are biodegradable. These are also micro-porous, which prevent problems such as condensation paint flaking.

Meanwhile, zero VOC paints contain five grams per liter or may be less of volatile organic compounds. These VOCs are usually added when paints are being added with color tints. This may go up to ten grams per liter but nonetheless, this is still a safe level.

On the other hand, low VOC paints use water as a carrier instead of petrochemical materials. With this, emissions are minimized therefore it is still safe to use.

Sometimes, these eco friendly paints may also contain low levels of metals and formaldehyde. Eco friendly paints that are classified as low VOCs contain up to 50 grams per liter of volatile organic compounds. Beyond the said level, the paint will already be a conventional paint, which is hazardous both to your health and the environment.

These low VOC paints will still release an odor until it is dry, but it would be less pungent than that of conventional paints.

When buying eco friendly paints, it is important to check the labels. You have to read the category of this paint if it is natural, no VOC or low VOC. This way, you will stay safe from these harmful substances. If you are very sensitive, make sure that you buy eco friendly paints with VOCs of less than twenty five grams per liter content.
