A survey related to complexion was led by Dr. Stephen and his colleagues in University of St. Andrews. The researchers selected 54 white people and asked them to adjust the white face color in the digital image by using computer software, which can make the picture look healthy and full of character charm. Many respondents in the survey chose pink and yellow to enhance transparency and make the skin look ruddy and shiny. The researchers said ruddy complexion is formed by eating more fruits and vegetables. The words of Stephen reports are quoted on Daily Mail: most previous research has focused on face and skin, in fact, one of the easily changed features on face is complexion. "We allow respondents changing the skin color and brightness, and if they think that the tanned skin is the most attractive, they would make the face turn yellow and darken," he said, "but on the contrary, they make the face look more yellow but brighter, which is unanimous to the color of renieratene which we intake from fruits and vegetables. Stephen said: "In Western society, we often think that the sun is the best way to improve the complexion, but our research shows that a healthy lifestyle and good eating habits may be more effective."

Stephen also explained that if the cardio-pulmonary are healthy, the blood and oxygen in skin capillary is sufficient ruddy complexion that looked healthy. the number of blood vessels in the skin among smokers, diabetes and heart disease patients is fewer, so they lack ruddy complexion. Oranges, tomatoes and other fruits, as well as carrots, spinach and other leafy vegetables are rich in carotenoids. Carotene is an antioxidant that can absorb the harmful substances generated in the process of resisting diseases. Besides, it is great significance to body's immune system and the reproductive system. Above all, it may have anti-cancer effect. In nature, some birds and fish are more attractive to the opposite sex because of carotene contained in their body. The researchers believe that the same biological mechanisms may also act on human beings. The findings are published in International Journal of Primates.
