Easy Ways To Fight Jet Lag

By:

The medical name of jet lag is Desynchronosis and it is a condition where if a person travels from one time zone to another, especially many time zones away, will experience fatigue for no undue reason. It mostly happens to people who travel from east to west or west to east.

The reason why it happens is because the bodys sense of time known as circadian rhythms gets out of balance. In a nut shell what this means is that the body thinks it is night time or sleep time, when it is actually day time. In extreme situations this happens when the person travels thousands of miles eastward or westward. An example of this is that when it is night time in North America it will be day time say in Asia. So traveling between these 2 places will aggravate ones circadian rhythm.

When a traveler such as a business person experiences jet lag, it can be very tiring when trying to get things done. But there are numerous ways to tackle this problem and some of the best ones will be dealt with here. First off, resist the temptation to take afternoon naps and eating whenever you feel hungry.

It is always best to try and follow the new time zone schedule as much as possible. According to research studies done on jet lag, if a person flies eastwards then going to sleep earlier than usual and when going west going to sleep later than usual will help. Flying in planes for long periods of time is dehydrating, therefore during and immediately afterwards it is a good idea to drink as much fluids as possible. Eating a protein rich diet is also very helpful.

Apart from changing ones sleeping and eating habits, there are also herb based medications that can help. These medications can be taken without a prescription. One of the most popular medications to help fight jetlag is Melatonin. Melatonin contains a type of hormone that has shown to help a persons circadian rhythm.

Even though it doesnt require a prescription it is a good idea to ask your doctor when and how much can be taken. Other herb based remedies include Valerian. If possible do not consume alcohol during or a few days after a flight. Getting as much sleep as possible while traveling can help reduce jet lag. Taking a flight that travels at day time is also a better idea, in fact most airlines nowadays are increasing their long haul flights to day time
