The worldwide recall of defective DePuy Hip Implant devices was announced in August of 2010. DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, recalled the following two artificial hip implant devices, the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The ASR XL Acetabular Hip System was commonly used in the United States since 2003, while the ASR Hip Resurfacing System was only implanted outside of the United States.
1. Schedule An Appointment With Your Surgeon
You have many different options in order to determine whether you have one of the recalled hip implant devices. If this is not possible, then contact your surgeon's office or the hospital where the procedure was done. If you have a recalled DePuy hip implant device, your surgeon's office should be aware of this and should be able to confirm whether you were fitted with a recalled DePuy hip implant device. If for some reason this approach is not successful, then you do have other options.
2. Check Your Medical Device ID Card
Following your hip implant surgery, you may have been given a medical device screening identification card for the purposes of getting through metal detectors at security screenings, such as airports. The medical device ID card may indicate the specific hip implant device that you were provided. Unfortunately, not all medical device ID cards indentify the specific make and model of the hip implant device. If you were not provided with a medical device ID card, then there are other ways to determine if you have a recalled DePuy hip implant device.
3. Obtain Your Medical Records
Request your medical records. The two documents that will most likely contain the hip implant. Your medical chart likely consists of hundreds, of pages of records, but not all of the records are important to determine your particular make and model of hip implant. If you have been able to confirm that you do have a recalled hip implant device, then contact a: 1. Surgical Implant Record; and 2. Operative Report.
