Easy Ways To Clean Your Vertical Blinds

By:

Most people do not enjoy cleaning, especially vertical blinds. In regular cleanings of the home, they seem to be neglected the most often. Like most cleaning, if done regularly, the work will be much easier. If it has been awhile since you cleaned your blinds, do not worry: here are easy ways to get them clean.

Move any furniture from around the window before you start. Using liquid sprays or soapy water, you may accidentally get some on the other furniture. If so, you would have to clean them too.

Whether the window blinds are made of wood, vinyl, or fabric, they can be cleaned very easily. You can use a soft brush attachment from the vacuum, soft cloth, or a duster to remove the dust. Following their direction, clean vertically to get the most dirt. If you wear old gloves or socks on your hands, you will get more dirt off.

The kind of blind does not matter, always be gentle. Wood and vinyl blinds are fairly sturdy. Be careful to not accidentally dent or bend them. Fabric blinds may be perforated so ensure you make no unwanted holes.

Ensure you clean the window blinds in both the closed and open positions. It is surprising how many forget, later realizing the job was only half done. No one wants to find dirty closed blinds when company arrives.

If you have been neglecting your blinds, there will be more than a little bit of dust. You will have to work a little harder to get this extra dirt off. Depending on the type of blind you have, there are several ways to accomplish their cleaning.

Vinyl blinds can easily be cleaned using a damp sponge or cloth with either an all purpose cleaner or soapy water. You may need to remove the window blinds to scrub them. If they are very dirty, you could fill your bathtub with warm soapy water and soak them for thirty minutes. Cover the tub with towels to make sure the window blinds do not scratch the surface. Once they have been soaking, the dirt will come right off and you can hang them to dry.

If you have fabric blinds, try to vacuum them with the gentle attachments. If this does not work, use warm water and a damp cloth. You may even be able to remove the fabric from the blind and wash them in the washing machine. Before you do this, be very careful to ensure the material is washable and can be safely removed.

Wood blinds should be cleaned with a soft cloth and all-purpose wood cleaner. This works for both finished and unfinished wood. Using an old pair of gloves and the wood cleaner are a great method for cleaning wood blinds. Water should never be used as it may cause blinds to warp and crack.

After you have cleaned your blinds, go over the slats with a fabric softener sheet. This will help to keep the dust off for longer. Just remember, if you regularly clean your vertical blinds, it will always be easy.
