Easy Tips To Save On The Mediterranean Diet

By:

When you are in the Mediterranean diet, eating healthy doesn't have to mean more money.

But that is the sad truth. Besides, what made fast food and junk foods healthy is the fact that they are cheaper than most.

Although this is off-putting, especially for someone who is still contemplating on whether the Mediterranean diet is the way to go, there are many ways to save with the Mediterranean diet. There are some tricks to make sure that living and eating healthy wont burn a hole in your pocket.

The Good News

The Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest diets in the world. Its all about freshness and avoiding the bad foods- foods filled with fat, harmful toxins and contains no nutritional value at all.

Another reason why the Mediterranean diet is so popular is because of the many health benefits it offers:

Cancer prevention
Long-term weight loss
Lower cholesterol
Heart diseases prevention
Alzheimers Disease prevention
Sharper memory

Statistics also showed that people who live along the Mediterranean Sea lived significantly longer than other people. Next to the longer life span, people living in the 16 countries along the Mediterranean were also much healthier and fit.

The Bad News

Although the Mediterranean diet has started and maintained a following in the US, there are stills some people who think that the ingredients needed to keep a Mediterranean lifestyle are too costly.

The Mediterranean diet is big on the use of extra virgin olive oil and well, it can be quite expensive. Youd also have to buy fruits and vegetables that are fresh off the market and this doesnt come cheap too.

And to add insult to injury, a study from UNs Food and Agriculture Organisation showed that the current Mediterranean diet is so much different from the eating habits that made the Mediterranean diet what it is known today. The study also says that about 75% of Greeks are overweight.

The Important News

So should you go on and move on to the next healthy diet? Absolutely not.

Even though the ingredients involved in most Mediterranean diet recipes cost more than a buck, there are still a lot of things that you can do to save money and eat healthy at the same time.

1. Stick to the Mediterranean diet basic ingredients

What essentially started the Mediterranean diet is the way Greek peasant farmers ate at around the 1950s. Because of their work and living state, they consumed a diet that did not involve meat, butter and eggs.

2. Create a weekly budget.

It is better to plan your meals weekly than daily. You should carefully create your weekly budget for food and make sure that you stick to it. Dont give in to temptations when youre inside the store!

3. Buy in bulk.

When you buy ingredients or food in bulk, chances are, you will get a discount. Just be sure to check the shelf life and quality of these products (olive oil, fruits, spices and some vegetables).

4. Mix and match ingredients.

Your Mediterranean diet does not have to be always made up of expensive ingredients. You can easily find resources and recipes that will teach you how to mix it up and make your own, inexpensive but still equally healthy version of the Mediterranean diet.
