Easy Entertaining Ideas: Gourmet Popcorn

By:

Having a party? The task of cooking for a crowd can dim the delight of the party itself. Gourmet popcorn is a great addition to your menu. Grill some steaks, toss a salad, and pull out some gourmet popcorn for a dessert that pleases. Crunchy and satisfying, gourmet popcorn can be made in your kitchen or purchased ahead of time and stored for up to three months.

If you want to make gourmet popcorn for your upcoming party, make sure you do it ahead of time since most recipes need some time for the popcorn coating to cool and harden. Unless it will be served warm (a few caramel popcorns are served this way), popcorn can be made a day in advance. Gourmet popcorn makes a great gift for friends, teachers, and neighbors.

Chocolate Popcorn
Chocolate covered popcorn is one of the easiest types of gourmet popcorn to make. You can make this simple recipe with 4 cups of popcorn and a bag of chocolate chips. First, pop your popcorn (unseasoned popcorn; you don't want a popcorn seasoning taste to mar the chocolate flavor!). Pour popcorn into a large bowl. Next, you will melt a 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips on 50% power in the microwave until it is mostly melted. The chocolate will glisten when ready; if you wait until chocolate chips melt together and lose their shape, you will overcook the chocolate. Stir the chocolate and mix it into the bowl, mixing thoroughly. Next, pour the mixture onto a greased cookie sheet. You can put it in the fridge for a quicker set, or leave it on the counter for several hours until the chocolate is hard. Once the chocolate is hardened, break up the chocolate popcorn into bite sized bits or clusters. You can store this in an airtight container for several weeks.

Toffee Popcorn
Toffee covered popcorn has just a few basic ingredients, and with a good candy thermometer and some time to spare, you can cook up an impressive homemade toffee coating. Toffee can be tricky to cook, though, so you'll need a good pan with a thick bottom or it can easily scorch. You will need butter, sugar, salt, and water for most recipes. The cooking times vary with your altitude, so find a toffee popcorn recipe that is well suited to your location.

Having a party? Gourmet popcorn is a great addition to your menu. Bags of gourmet toffee popcorn and chocolate covered popcorn make great gifts for friends, teachers, and neighbors.
