Easy Doll Quilts For Beginners Using The Log Cabin Pattern

By:

A log cabin doll quilt pattern starts at the center with two exact blocks. The square swatches are pieced together at one side to make a rectangle. The starting rectangle becomes encircled with larger rectangular pieces, always sewn together to create a block.

With the use of color, the final out come has the appearance of stair steps going from one corner of the big square to the other. The colors frequently selected for the pieces are darker shades in one half. You might say under the stair steps. Lighter colors are normally selected for the other side. The coloring creates interest and offers something of a two-dimensional look. Quilters play with color to add all kinds of patterns. Some designers opt to use single colored pieces on one side and many colored pieces on the other. Selecting a spackled color creates dimension in the appearance.

The pattern is one that is easy to sew and is frequently encouraged for beginners. When a quilter's talent grows, she can utilize the same basic pattern to make all kinds of designs, easily through the use of color choices. For example, you can begin with a dark block in the center and select lighter colors for each surrounding block or vice versa. You could start with light colors on the inside and darker colors on the outer edge. You wouldn't have the traditional log cabin quilt pattern, because the accent would be on the blocks. To put it another way, you wouldn't have the stair-step appearance. But sometimes you want something unusual.

If you are making quilts for dolls, you will want to reduce the size of the initial two squares and the surrounding rectangles. If you start with the normal size used in a full sized quilt, you would finish with only about nine pieces and the appearance would be out of proportion to the doll. It is not difficult to make a log cabin quilt design in proportion for dolls of any size by beginning with a computerized design, then easily change the zoom, print it off, and you receive the size you need. Another possibility for larger quilts is to start with small doll-sized squares and then sew these together. I have seen some models of that pattern. It looks wonderful. Quilting needs time and practice.

An easy log cabin quilt pattern for beginners, is one of the best for practicing and learning to sew quilt blocks. You will be stitching short pieces of rectangular fabrics, all cut on straight grainlines together, and attaining beautiful results.
