Cambodia possesses a certain magic about it that puts many visitors under a spell. Its charming, yet mystifying kingdom contains wonders of spirituality. This Southeast Asian countrys official religion is Theravada Buddhism. It is a country rich with a history both inspirational and unfortunate, a fascinating nation which strides resolutely towards the future.
Entering the Angkor region in Cambodia will take you to the major tourist attraction known as the East Mebon, a temple referred to as a spectacular blend of symbolism. This temple built by King Rajendravarman II was dedicated to Shiva, the Hindu god in addition to honouring the kings parents. It rests on an island called East Baray, which is an artificial reservoir. The body of water surrounding this island can no longer be seen and it will take some time for visitors to East Mebon to realize that they have entered the enormous man-made reservoir, due to its size.
The temples layout is basically inclusive of five towers and a base with three levels atop and this amazing ruin includes structures of brave looking guardian lions, stone elephants adorning each corner and prasats which have lintels and fake doors displaying superior craftsmanship through their intricate carvings. Within the prasats there are Buddha images to which devotees pay homage. While visiting East Mebon, one can visualize the reservoir surrounding the island filled with water, up to the first platforms level. This unique temple was originally named as Yashodharatataka' by King Rajendravarman and it was made out of a full range of robust Khmer construction materials; laterite, sandstone, brick and stucco. As for the central sanctuaries of East Mebon, there are five towers of brick having three fake doors made of sandstone. The corners are nicely embellished with male figures.
Religious scenes in the temple include the god Shiva on his mount Nandi, the sacred bull and Indra on his three headed elephant Airavata. A humorous portrayal seems quite synonymous with the character of Ganesh, who is known as a jovial, kind-natured god.
