East Lyme

Located at the heart of New London County in Connecticut, United States is the lush town of East Lyme. Its 42 square miles (108.7 square kilometers) total territorial area is laden with various natural wonders from fascinating bays to marvelous hills and valleys.

The United States Census Bureau recorded that the town of East Lyme has about 34 square miles or 88.1 square kilometers of land and 7.9 square miles or 20.5 square kilometers of water. Among its waters are the Long Island Sound and the Niantic River, which feeds water to the Niantic Bay. Its land covers vast valleys of blooming greens and fabulous hills. Its valleys were formed from the glaciers shaped through the earths bedrock.

During summer, this lovely town boasts of glorious trees gracing the whole town in their full bloom.

East Lymes Two Villages

East Lyme is composed of two lovely villages having their own share of giving the town its characteristic image. Its two villages, the Village of Niantic and the Village of Flanders differ in a sense that the Village of Niantic is the more popularly known and visited. It covers the Niantic River and the Niantic Bay, which serves as the beach of the town that several tourists visit every year. It is the popularity of this beach that caused some people to erroneously refer to East Lyme as Niantic. The Village of Niantic is more densely populated than the Village of Flanders. It is where business, commerce and tourism are concentrated.

The Village of Niantic was named after the Nehantic Indians who once populated the area of what is now known as the Rhode Island to the Connecticut River. It is East Lymes center of sports fishing, summer tourism, and restaurant business. Seafood restaurants, hotels, beach resorts and casinos boom in this side of the town. It is also home to the Rocky Neck State Park, which is an excellent venue for swimming, camping, and picnic holidays. The Village of Niantic is also known for the one-mile long Niantic Bay Boardwalk.

The Village of Flanders, on the other hand, is home to fewer residents. However, it is widely known for its flourishing apple orchards and lush forests. The village was named after Flanders, Belgium because of the cottage textile industry along Old Post Road, which is said to be quite similar to the cottage textile industries in Flanders, Belgium.
