East Coast Or West Coast?

By:

Everyone loves the beach, right? The sound of the waves, the feel of sand between your toes, and hunting for shells on the shore--it all seems to come naturally when you're vacationing on the coast.

But if you normally live far from the ocean and don't have any family motivating your beach-centered getaway, then it might be difficult to make a decision about where to go. Which is better, you ask yourself, the East or West Coast? Which will provide more fun for yourself, your spouse, and your children? Which destination will be more cost-effective?

Well, as you can guess, there are many factors which will influence the answers to these questions, but I can at least give you some pointers to help you with the final decision, so listen up!

As most people already know, the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico tend to be warmer than the Atlantic seaboard, so if you're daunted by the prospect of cold water and plan to pursue ocean-based activities like surfing and snorkeling, you will be better off searching your options in California, western Mexico, the western side of Florida, the Caribbean, and Hawai'i.

Don't forget, however, that recently enacted laws require anyone traveling to Mexico or the Caribbean to have a valid passport. So if you are planning to visit beaches outside the United States, make sure to begin the process of obtaining passports for any member of the family in need of one as early as possible, as there can be many complications. Don't forget to factor the fees into travel expenses.

On the East Coast, everything is in much closer proximity, so you can visit historical sites and enjoy a smoldering night life in almost the same breath as walking the beach and boogie boarding. Imagine driving from your Cape Cod accommodations into Boston to explore Harvard or hit a club.

When you're thinking about travel expenses, you should not assume that airfare will automatically be cheapest for the closest beach. Though I live closest to the Pacific Coast, I have sometimes snagged incredible deals that take me to select cities along the Atlantic for much less than I would expect to pay to fly into Los Angeles.

If your dates are flexible, you should subscribe to online newsletters for travelers so you can be alerted to the best deals for the destinations you hope to reach. You may also want to talk to a travel agent for more specific tips to where you are traveling from and where you intend to go
