E-commerce And Drop Shipping: Working Together

By:

If you've ever browsed online, looked for a product to buy, hit the "buy" button, and had it shipped to your home, you have participated in e-commerce and possibly even drop shipping. Though the two terms may not be familiar to everyone, just about everyone has benefited from them. Today's world is largely driven by sales on the internet. What once required a trip to the store can now be accomplished from the comfort of your own home. Just about every product you can think is available via the internet.

This electronic world of buying and selling on the internet is what is referred to as e-commerce or electronic commerce. Realizing the importance and necessity of internet sales, just about every business has developed some form of internet presence or is in the process of doing so. E-commerce encompasses a wide variety of business. It might include sales of virtual products or services, like access to content of a website, or some type of internet gaming sale like characters or levels. However, most e-commerce is the sale of a physical item. For example, if someone is interested in purchasing a piece of sporting equipment like some golf clubs, they might go online to an online sporting goods store, purchase the items, and have them shipped to their door. In this process, the consumer has participated in e-commerce and possibly even drop shipping.

Drop shipping is a term that means that a retailer does not keep the goods that they advertise online in stock. Instead, when someone makes a purchase from the company's online store, the company transfers the details of the order to a wholesaler or manufacturer. The wholesaler is likely a company that warehouses products in bulk at cheaper prices. Once the order is received, the wholesaler will then ship the product directly to the consumer, most likely packaged under the name of the company the consumer made the purchase through. The retail business makes their profit, like any retail business, through the difference between the advertised price and the manufacturer price.

For e-commerce businesses, drop shipping helps cuts costs for the business and the consumer. By not having to purchase upfront inventory, the business is able to cut warehousing and shipping costs for themselves, which also cuts costs for the consumer as well. By using this method, an e-commerce business can increase its efficiency and service to its customers.
