Dynamics Gp Reporting: Frx, Crystal, Ssrs, Practical Advices From The Field Consultant

For the introduction paragraph, Id like to mention that all the tools are doing their job, the dilemma however is to select the right tool to do the job. Reports may differ in their nature. Lets review such reports as Balance Sheet, P&L, Statement of Cash Flow these are Financial reports, coming directly from your GL Chart of Accounts. Theoretically you can make BS or P&L in Crystal Reports, but this would require you to replicate most of the GL connection business logic, already available in FRx or Microsoft Management Reporter (GL20000 and GL30000 tables, plus summaries). If you would like to reinvent the bicycle go ahead, but for the rest of us, lets just design consolidated Profit and Loss Statement report in FRx. Theory is the theory, but theory might not always work as expected and then you have to follow the practical advices from somebody who already tried the tools and suggests some deviations:

1.SSRS. We tried to deploy them you may know that you have various predefined SSRS reports, coming with GP version 2010 and even 10.0. We went into the installation limbo, tried several calls to SSRS gurus and decided to wait a little bit, while SSRS technology comes to the maturity

2.FRx this is very solid Financial Reporting technology. It was introduced back in earlier 1990th, and FRx is so universal that it is available for multiple Corporate ERP brands, including Dynamics GP Great Plains, Dynamics AX Axapta. SL Solomon, NAV Navision, plus various non Microsoft Business Solutions ERP systems

3.Crystal Reports. This is solid rock. CR is the tool of choice in our opinion, probably due to the fact that you have hundreds of thousand Crystal Report professionals available in the USA on the job and contractors market

4.Microsoft Management Reporter. We heard several opinions, that this tool is very similar to the FRx, it was released for GP version 10.0 and current version 2010/11.0. The news are great, but we would like to have MMR to mature with several service packs released and bugs fixed
