Dvd Storage Media Information - All You Need To Know About

Why Use DVDs?

A DVD or Digital Versatile Disc is a secure, long lasting method of storing electronic data. You can store any electronic data, from photo, music and video files to office documents and financial data that may be required after several years. When compared to CDs, DVDs can store up to seven times more data and uses a much more advanced technology. DVD Media discs can store up to 7.95 GB or 4 hours of movie time on a single layer DVD and up to 15.9 GB or around 8 hours of movie time on a double layered DVD. In other words, DVD is a format of optical disc storage medium, with a greater audio-visual data storage capacity than that of the compact disc of the same dimensions. The recorded laser wavelength used in the standard DVD is 650 nm, thus, it is read (played back) with a red laser. Pre-recorded audio- and video-program DVDs are mass-produced with molding machines that stamp the data onto the disc. Such a disc is a read-only memory disc (DVD-ROM), because data can only be read (played back) and can neither be erased nor overwritten. Blank, recordable DVDs (DVD-R and DVD+R can have data recorded only once, with an optical disc drive DVD recorder, and then function as a DVD-ROM. Rewritable DVDs (DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM) can be repeatedly recorded and erased.

The DVD format is applied to DVD-Video and DVD-Audio consumer products, and for recording AVCHD discs. DVD storage media also have a long life, so are a great option for storing data that you may require at some point in the future, but do not want cluttering up your laptop or PC hard disk space. If you have a lot of music or take a lot of photos for example these can be categorised and stored on DVDs. Due to their light weight and small size DVDs are also great for transferring or sharing data of any type.

Important Points to Keep in Mind While Storing Your DVDs

While DVD media provides a great way to store data, you must ensure that the discs are stored in an appropriate manner, to ensure that they last for the longest possible time. Moisture, heat, sunlight and dust are all enemies of these discs, so you need to ensure that they are kept away from these elements. There are several types of DVD media storage options, ranging from single plastic cases to cabinets or boxes designed to store large numbers of discs. These can also be found in various materials, ranging from wood to metal. Depending on where your storage boxes will be kept, how long you need to store them for and how often you will need to access them, you can choose an appropriate material and design for your DVD media storage.

Types of DVDs

As already mentioned DVD storage media can be of several capacities, depending on the number of layers the disc had. But there are other categories as well. While some DVDs are re-writeable, which means that the data saved on them can be erased and new data can be saved on the same space, some allow only a single usage. Dual-layer recording allows DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more dataup to 8.54 gigabytes per disc, compared with 4.7 gigabytes for single-layer discs. Along with this, DVD-DLs have slower write speeds as compared to ordinary DVDs and when played on a DVD player a slight transition can sometimes be seen between the layers. DVD-R DL was developed for the DVD Forum by Pioneer Corporation; DVD+R DL was developed for the DVD+RW Alliance by Philips and Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM). A dual-layer disc differs from its usual DVD counterpart by employing a second physical layer within the disc itself. The drive with dual-layer capability accesses the second layer by shining the laser through the first semitransparent layer.

In some DVD players, the layer change can exhibit a noticeable pause, up to several seconds. This caused some viewers to worry that their dual-layer discs were damaged or defective, with the end result that studios began listing a standard message explaining the dual-layer pausing effect on all dual-layer disc packaging. While DVD video discs are probably the most popular at the moment, DVD audio discs are a type of DVD media storage that is likely to become popular in the future, along with DVD audio players. The quality of an audio DVD is superior to that of an audio CD, since the former can contain music at a 192 hHz/24 bit audio level.
