Dumbwaiters As Used In The Home

By:

When many consider a dumbwaiter, they think back on some of the large ones that are used commercially. Perhaps they work at a large manufacturer that uses a heavy duty dumbwaiter or they might be familiar with the types used on aircraft carriers. While the dumbwaiter does play an integral part in many commercial settings, it is also incredibly widely used in many homes across the world.

The primary service that is provided by a dumbwaiter in the home is that it facilitates the easy transfer of items throughout the structure. Almost any household item, space and weight permitting, can be easily sent throughout the house. There is no longer a need to struggle or dangerously wobble while carrying items up the stairs. These are great for those who are mobility challenged and have difficulty using the stairs, but they also provide a very valuable service to millions of others.

The installation of a dumbwaiter in the home can be a little tricky, but there are several models available that are configured to make the installation quicker and easier. These lifts come largely preassembled. The drive system and car are aligned by the factory, so they can be installed at once. The use of snap together electrical connections also aids in eliminating much of the messy wiring associated with other lifts. Despite the actions taken to make the installation easier and quicker, it still requires a firm understanding of construction.

It is a good idea to read the installation instructions, so you can determine if it is something you feel comfortable doing. Most homeowners opt to have the dumbwaiter professionally installed, but even if you go this route, an easy to install dumbwaiter will help reduce the cost of the installation.

The electric dumbwaiter is by far the most popular type used in the home today, but it is possible to install a manual lift as well. Generally, however, the manual lifts are not as responsive or able to support as much weight. Since the homeowner will have to physically raise or lower the dumbwaiter by hand, manual dumbwaiters are usually not a good choice for most people. There are some kits available though that offer a manual lift and some people choose to make one their selves.

In most cases, the electric dumbwaiter is used and offers the most value to a homeowner. An electric dumbwaiter will typically support at least a hundred pounds, but it is possible to get larger lifts that support more weight and have larger cars. The car is the part of the dumbwaiter that carries the load between floors. Some businesses opt to go with cars that have shelving in them, to make the most use out of the space in the car.

Dumbwaiters are one way that items can be moved around a home easier and with less risk of a fall on the stairs.
