Dumbwaiters: Installation And Uses

By:

A dumbwaiter is in many ways incredibly similar to an elevator. At its most basic, it is simply a platform or box that is raised and lowered between floors. At its most complicated, it is a powerful lifting tool, with built in sensors and compartments to take advantage of the space it has available.

Dumbwaiters help those who are mobility challenged as well, because they allow for items, like the groceries, to be moved around the home easily, without having to carry them up the stairs. In this way, they can be instrumental in preventing falls among those who can not easily use the stairs.

When making the decision to install and use a decision, you will likely be required to have the installation done professionally. There are several dumbwaiter kits on the market that offer a much simplified installation process, but it still requires a pretty solid understanding of construction. However, by using a kit that can be installed quickly, it is possible to save money on the installation if you decide to have it done professionally.

Most lifts will require some planning ahead of time. The main decision that must be made is where the dumbwaiter will be placed. It will require a vertical space between floors called a shaft. The shaft must be completely straight, but most residential dumbwaiters can be installed into a wooden framed home.

Deciding where you intend to use the lift, can help you decide where to place it. For instance if want to be able to use it to do laundry, then ideally it could be placed directly in the laundry room. These lifts can be configured with doors that open on different sides, so it is possible to open on one side in the laundry room and a different side in the bedroom.

Depending on the type of dumbwaiter, the weight capacity can vary. Most can support between fifty and two-hundred pounds. Usually going with a lift that can support at least a hundred pounds is a good idea. Fifty pounds can sound like a lot, but weight can quickly add up. Some are available that can support much more than this, including many commercial dumbwaiters that support over seven-hundred pounds.

The electric dumbwaiter is by far the most popular today, but some individuals still use manual lifts. The downside to a manual lift, aside from having to physically haul materials between floors, is that it can not support as much weight as other dumbwaiters. The manual dumbwaiter is also generally not as stable either.

In the home, a dumbwaiter can be used to make it easier to bring firewood to the den or bring groceries to the kitchen. Their popularity is not restricted to the home though, because these devices are commonly also used in businesses.
