Dry Food Storage: A Wise Investment

By:

The phrase dry food storage often causes eyes to roll with weary impatience: Who wants to eat that stuff? Why should people buy a bunch of raw grain, freeze-dried fruit, and dehydrated milk, and leave it sitting in the basement? Aren’t there better ways to spent time and money?

This is exactly the attitude lampooned in the famous parable of the grasshopper and the ant: Some people prudently manage their time, money, and resources when times are good, and are prepared when times take a turn for the worse. Well, guess what? Times have taken a turn for the worse, and they won’t get better anytime soon. It’s still possible – and still a very good idea – to obtain dry food storage supplies.

A good place to begin is by obtaining short term dry food storage – enough for a household to get by for about two weeks – with a longer-term goal to build up a year’s supply of food. There is no better investment for the times ahead than a reliable dry food storage supply. For decades or centuries Americans have indulged themselves in the unwarranted assumption that we will always have access to a never-ending supply of inexpensive, healthy food. Well, guess what: Reality is knocking, and he’s brought a big, ugly friend named “food shortages.”

Food riots are already erupting in many countries as price inflation propels the price of basic staples – like rice, wheat, and corn – beyond the reach of household budgets. After being relatively tame for a long time, price inflation is raging here in the U.S., and on the basis of recent history we can expect government intervention in the form of price controls; this always leads to shortages. In the early 1970s, this approach to gas prices led to fuel rationing; the same approach to government-mandated health insurance has led to de facto medical rationing. Is food rationing next? Are you willing to bet your life, and the lives of your family on the chance that it’s not coming? If you aren’t, you really should act right away and start getting some dry food storage supplies.
