Dry Cracked Mouth Corners - What's The Cause?

By:

If you have dry cracked mouth corners, you may be very frustrated that they simply don't seem to be improving. Any condition which affects the mouth are can be very difficult to heal for a few reasons. Firstly, the mouth is in almost constant use for speaking, eating or drinking, so keeping the area still to promote healing is difficult. Next, the face and mouth are often exposed to the elements, so extremes of temperature can make matters worse. Also, Finally, you cannot put a medical dressing on the area, as you might do with a cut finger!

In terms of the mouth corners though, there can be a very specific reason why healing is just not happening. Dry cracked mouth corners are often the result of a condition known as angular cheilitis. This is a fungal or bacterial condition which latches onto the skin in this area for the simple reason that it provides the perfect environment as it is often constantly damp and warm, particularly if you have tiny folds of skin there.

Once fungal infection or bacteria gets a grip, it can be extremely difficult to eradicate and one of the only true ways this can be done is to starve the bacteria or fungal infection of air and moisture, the two ingredients they to survive.

The reasons why people might get angular cheilitis can vary. In some, it can be the result of nutritional deficiencies, caused by a lack of vitamin B or iron. In others it can be the simple overwetting of the area caused by drooling or dribbling, possible due to badly fitting dentures or simply because the sufferer is prone to chew on pens or fingers! In older people, it can be the result of slacker facial muscles caused by the aging process.

Of course, stopping the causes is a good way forward, such as taking supplements if appropriate, or having dentures corrected, preventing constant chewing etc, but this in itself will not heal the dry cracked mouth corners. You can get a little temporary relief though by applying a thin coat of honey or petroleum jelly.

If you have had cracked lips or scabs for more than a couple of days, it is very likely that bacteria or fungal infection has taken hold.
