The Drum Tower is said to have been constructed in 1272 under the watchful eye of Kublai Khan who was a great Mongolian leader. This tower was known by the name of the Tower of Orderly Administration at the time. However the building was reconstructed in 1420 by Emperor Yongle on a different location to which further additions were made by Emperor Jiaqing during the 1800s. It was only in 1924 that the tower was named Mingchilou.

The Drum Tower itself is a magnificent building which is approximately 47 meters tall and was originally used to announce the time to the local community. The upper section of the tower housed a total of 24 drums in ancient times out of which only one has been able to stand the test of time. Visitors to this historic site can enjoy breathtaking views of Beijing from the top of this tower and should not forget to take some time to visit the neighbouring Bell Tower as well.
