Drug Addiction - The Symptoms

By:

Other behavioral patterns usually try to mask indicators of over reliance on illicit drugs. Addiction to illicit substances commences when the person can't help wanting to use the drug without considering the physical or emotional consequences. There are nonetheless some obvious indicators to look for if you want to find out if you or some one you love has an dependence problem.

The sign on top of the list will be the inability to say no to the drug. Those dependent on drugs cannot envision a life without the drug of their choice. They would go to any lengths to get supplies of illicit drugs for regular use and will often over use too.

The only thing that matters to addicts is the next 'fix'. All previously activities such as hobbies, families, work and college become unimportant. Nothing else matters except the use of the drug of choice.

Another good sign of drug dependence is variations in emotions. They are either 'up' or 'down' and not ever what could be called 'typical'. Angry outbursts and irrational conduct also become regular. Addicts will begin doing things that they normally would not do, if they can't get their fix when the urge takes over.

Changes in the physical shape start manifesting when the dependency has set in. They are likely to lose weight rapidly and become thin and ashen in appearance. Personal hygiene takes a back seat and they commence looking untidy and seedy. Eyes become dull and unmoving and they often foster sores on their bodies. They develop a indifferent look about them.

Since regular consumption of drugs builds up imperviousness in the system, the user starts craving more and more dosage to attain the same old high.

Addicts commence acting weirdly occasionally bordering on suspicion. They will withdraw from gatherings, absent themselves for no apparent explanation. They may emotionally detach themselves from those that they were earlier attached to. With such alienation, it becomes easier for them to use illicit substances without fear of disparagement and disparagement from those close to them.

Drug habit often leads to severe depression. Signs of hopelessness, nothingness, removal from company are all tell-tale signs of such depression. Performance indicators at work and university can take a turn for the worse for no clear reason. They may not want to get out of bed for long periods of time and show tell-tale signs of relentless exhaustion.

Drug habit is a disorder, a serious one. No sooner than it is seen for what it is, help must be sought. It is never too late be it for yourself or some one you care for.
