Droid X Extended Battery Review

Do you have a Motorola Droid X Smartphone? Does the standard battery with only 1390 mAh give you enough time between charges? If not, you may want to consider buying a Droid X extended battery. Genuine Motorola (OEM) Droid X extended batteries (BH6X is 1800 mAh) are available, as well as aftermarket extended batteries, usually 2300mAh. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of the extended battery?

I love my Droid X. I have had it now for about 7 months. I love the large 4.3 inch screen. Its sharp and crisp and ideal for looking at my photo gallery. The Droid X is fast, running on a 1 GHz processor, with 8 MB of internal memory that is expandable up to 40 MB with a 32 MicroSD card. It came with a 16 MB MicroSD card, and so far I havent filled that one, so I havent upgraded to the 32 MB card. The 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash is especially cool. I have given up carrying my digital camera since the Droid X takes such great photos. It also can take HD video at 720p. With the micro USB connector I can easily sync it with my PC. It also has an HDMI connector so you can connect it to the TV.

Are there any downsides to the Droid X? Yes. It is larger than most cell phones, so those people looking for a pocket phone may think its too large. It also seems to heat up a bit when playing games. The Droid X also seems to be a battery hog. With the standard 1390 mAh hour battery that came with the phone, I found I could barely make it through a full day of use. Before you ask, yes I have turned off the GPS, installed Advanced App Killer, and constantly monitor the usage. Another disadvantage is that the Droid X is a little too large to hold up to your ear to make phone calls. And unless you lock the touch screen before you put it up to your ear, you run the danger of accidently either disconnecting or starting an app when you dont want to. For this reason I almost always use my Bluetooth headset. It also gives my two hands to multi-task. Another downside to the Droid X is it only has a touch screen keyboard. I would have preferred a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and if I really had my druthers, it would be like the LG Allys keyboard that has raised keys, making it easier to type. But I have gotten used to the virtual keyboard, and the Droid X does offer Swype, which allows you to slide between keys. And of course all Android Smartphone have voice to text capabilities, so the virtual keyboard isnt that big a deal.

Should you buy a Droid extended battery? Heres the deal. The Droid X is a nice thin Smartphone, even though the screen is large. When you install an extended battery, it is thicker and heavier. It requires an extended battery cover. It takes the flat back of the phone and creates a larger ledge as it were. (See the photo I took of my Droid X with extended battery at the right.) You will have to buy a special extended battery case because your standard gel case or leather case wont fit with the extended battery. That being said, having the extra battery capacity means that I only charge my phone every other day, even under heavy use. I love knowing that I wont suddenly run out of juice. I bought the aftermarket extended battery because it had a higher capacity (mAh) than the OEM extended battery. It was also cheaper.

To buy or not to buy, that is the question. As I have said, I love the extra capacity of the Droid X extended battery. Its up to you to decide if you can handle the extra weight of an extended battery as well as having to buy a different case for your phone. I have decided it is well worth it.
