Driving With Pets? Keep Fido Safe And Cleaning Costs To A Minimum

Pet owners know that driving with their furry ones is unavoidable. Trips to the vet's office, to the pet store, to the dog park, and to your favorite pet friendly bistro or coffee shop are both necessary and fun. However, when it comes to keeping your car clean, keeping your budget in check, and maintaining a great relationship with your pet, a few details should be considered.

Sure, Fido is cute riding down the road with his head out the window, enjoying the breeze and feeling the wind rush through his fur, but all that fur could very well end up in your backseat. If it's warm enough for your puppy to want to stick his head outside, then it's warm enough for him to be shedding all over the place. By the end of the season, you may have a backseat full of dog hair and a hefty car cleaning bill. The same can happen during the colder months, but without the distraction of an open window man's best friend might look to the interior of the car for entertainment—and in doing so ruin seatbelts, upholstery, and other items in the process. So, what's a pet lover to do to keep the budget in check and the car clean? Follow these tips:

• Invest in a designated "pet blanket." Whether it's a new blanket bought specifically for this cause or an old threadbare sheet that has seen its last days, the pet blanket can protect against the accumulation of dog and cat hair, slobber, and other messes that may be made in the back seat. Be sure to put the pet blanket across the backseat of your car before letting Fido jump in. This will not only provide a layer of protection between your pet and your upholstery, it will also hide seatbelts—which can quickly become interesting to a bored animal. Keep the seats clean and the belts intact with this simple and cheap trick and you, Fido, and your car will be able to enjoy many comfortable rides together.

• Purchase a harness. Safety is highly important, as is keeping your car clean and your maintenance bills low. Luckily, the use of a harness, in place of or in addition to a collar, will be able to help you increase both safety and cleanliness! Strapping your dog in is important; should you get into an accident you want to be sure that your furry friend will be secure and not thrown from the vehicle. Using the collar as an anchor is unsafe, as it can cause severe damage to the neck if jerked quickly. A harness, however, can provide less stress and a greater level of security, ensuring that your dog will be much safer. Additionally, have your dog properly strapped into the vehicle will limit his range of motion—meaning that only one seat is occupied and soiled with dog hair and only one window is subject to drool.

Taking your pet out on a drive can be really fun—especially for an animal that is inside most of the time. However, when doing so, make sure that you take these precautions to keep your cleaning bills down and your pet's safety in mind.
