Driving Blind Without The Correct Contact Lenses

By:

People who have had trouble with their contact lenses know what a hassle getting the correct lenses can be. However, getting the correct contact lenses can be more than just a matter of insuring comfort; it can be matter of life and death, literally. People wear corrective lenses for a variety of reasons. People wear them due to vanity, job requirements, participating in activities that are more enjoyable without glasses, and many other reasons.

Sometimes, as people age, they need prescription lenses in order to better see. Of course it is important for people in that kind of situation to get some sort of corrective lens assistance. The problem occurs when those same people drive without making certain they have the best fitting contact lenses available. There are several issues that can occur when someone drives without having the best corrective lenses.

When people drive without having the proper prescription, then what the driver sees will be blurry or in some other way distorted. Obviously, this is not safe. When the driver cannot clearly see the other vehicles, or people, or animals that may be sharing the road with them, they are putting themselves and others at risk. For people who have worn them for a while, these changes might sneak up on them and they may not even be aware that they need a new prescription. This is an example of how a regular check-up to insure a proper prescription and to insure eye health in other ways is important. This check-up is not just for the driver's eyes, but also for those who might share the road with a driver who cannot see clearly.

People who might be new to wearing contacts might have other problems with their contact lenses. It is not unusual for those who have never worn lenses, either because they had previously worn prescription glasses or because their eyesight weakened over time, to receive contacts that are not perfect for them. As a new wearer of contacts, the patient may not realize that they can do better. It is not uncommon for patients to need to try different brands of contact lenses in order to find the brand that is right for their particular situation. Sometimes new wearers believe that as their eyes adjust to having a foreign object placed in their eye (the contact lens), their eyes will "settle down" and they will be able to see as they get used to wearing contacts. This might turn out to be true, but it is a dangerous situation for that patient to drive before their eyes have adjusted to the lens. In the meantime, their eyes might feel extreme discomfort, which can be distracting to the driver, or their vision might be blurry. In either case, the driver is putting themselves and other drivers in danger of injury or even death

Wearers can help make the road a safer place by insuring they have the best contacts available for them. They also need to go for regular checkups to insure that they have the most up-to-date prescription needed. By taking these precautions, the road will remain a safer place.
