Drive Safely This Winter

By:

Last year a high number of accidents occurred due to bad weather, either caused by ice on the roads or simply because of careless driving. This winter is supposed to be one of the worst in the last 100 years, so you can understand why it is important that you drive as safely as possible when out on the roads.

There really isnt any reason for careless driving in bad weather conditions, as everyone knows what driving in such a way can do. If you are travelling over the speed limit and you hit a patch of black ice the consequences could be disastrous, so when you are driving this wintertime remember to play it safe.

If the roads are icy you should always lower your speed to just below the limit. By doing this it will be easier to perform an emergency stop if you need to. In foggy weather always leave yourself enough space behind the driver in front. You should never tailgate another driver as, if they were to stop suddenly, you would go into the back of them. Though you may think that you need to be right up against the other driver to see where you are going, you dont. You can use your fog lights and drive slowly to avoid accidents. In all weather, if you feel that it is unsafe to drive you should always pull over to the side of the road and either wait it out or call for help.

Snowfall has become a bigger issue in the UK in recent years, going from no snow throughout the last few months of the year to snow all through the wintertime. Snow chains are available in this country and they arent illegal, but you should be careful when using them. If the snow you are driving in isnt quite thick enough you could just end up doing damage to your tyres and the road surface, which could see you getting a fine from the police if they stop you.

An alternative to snow chains are snow socks, which are simply specially designed material socks that you fit over your drive wheels. They are perfect for intermittent snowfall and can just add a little bit of extra grip to help you out when driving in snowy weather.

It is also important that you keep your windscreen free from snow or ice during the wintertime, so you should always thoroughly defrost it before you set off.
