Drip Irrigation Is The Key To Perfect Summer Gardens

By:

As we slowly move further towards summer there is a lot you can be doing to maintain and keep your garden beautiful for the months ahead. These months are undoubtedly the best you can fully enjoy your garden so ensuring that its beginning to look good will guarantee you a fantastic couple of months within the sunshine. Here we look at what areas of your garden you should be concentrating on and where to begin, so what could be a rather daunting task is broken down.

So, the first things you should be considering is protecting plants for late frosts, as some tender plants will need protecting more than others. In the vegetable garden you can begin to earth the potatoes and plant any that you find are still remaining. Plant out summer bedding at the end of the month but try to avoid the cold areas.

Begin collecting rain water; this is incredibly important as drip irrigation is a great way to maintain the health of your garden. Recycling water is the best way to keep your garden watered, as winters are becoming drier there is less water stored within UK reservoirs and creates hose pipe bans within the summer months. Water is obviously an essential requirement for plants and a watering system within your garden such as drip irrigation of recycled water is the best way to ensure despite scarce levels of rain you garden stays green.

So, with all that watering within your garden, the drip irrigation will create lots of plant life, including those you may not wish, so regularly hoe off weeds. If you leave them for too long they will become more and more unmanageable. Keeping on top of them now will keep your work load far smaller. Also mow lawns weekly to ensure that your lawn does not become overgrown either, just like the weeds you do not want to create more work for yourself. When you begin to clip your hedges however, do check for nesting birds as they will be nesting at this point.

Lift and divide your daffodil and other spring-flowering bulbs as they will be overcrowded. Make sure you watch out for two garden pests, viburnum beetles and lily beetles as their larvae's do the most damage in late spring. Once they are fully fed the larvae pupate in the soil and lay eggs for more pests to come feed on your lovingly watered plants. This pest has become a far bigger problem in the last ten years than ever before.
