Dreams Intepretations - Getting To The True Meaning

In days gone by, the ancient Greeks and Egyptians were of the opinion that dreams were either divine intervention or supernatural communication. They also were of the opinion that only a very few people were gifted with the special gift to interpret these dreams. New psychological sectors have put together dream dictionaries to help individuals understand their dreams interpretation.


In nineteen hundred famous psychotherapist, Sigmund Freud wrote a book about the interpretation of dreams. It was his belief that one would be wishing for something and this would manifest in a dream. Often this would mirror something that has happened the day before.


Freud went on to conclude that the likelihood of dreamers to interpret their dreams is as slim as neurotics comprehending the seriousness of their symptoms. The reason for this is the fact that small children have very simple dreams, usually linked directly to the events of the day before. Adults however, experience more distorted dreams. The reason for this is that adults have many concealed thoughts and emotions in their subconscious, causing dreams to be more complicated.


He further elaborated that the censor or dormant thought was the result of an internal psychic force. Eventually, this was expanded to being the work of the super ego and the guarding of the conscious mind. Resistance, which blocked these thoughts during waking hours, was able to emerge when the subject is asleep. However, even during deep sleep, there is still strong enough resistance to camouflage the true meaning of the dream.


Freud believed that dreams were a mechanism to aid the sleep of the subject. At the same time, particular wishes and desires are disguised or repressed by the conscious mind, although it is in a resting phase. If this were not the case, the sleeper would likely be disturbed or wakened.


Carl Jung contradicted Freud's opinions. Jung believed in the fact that archetypal symbols were universal. He believed in signs and that symbols had an individualized connotation with their meanings. He believed that symbols in dreams should be explored in relation to the specific significance, which they have, to a patient.


He did not agree that each night vision had a predetermined meaning. He rather believed that the dreamer would be expected to have a certain associations with an image, which is presented. Jung believed that the lack of significance would make the interpreter suspicious. Context is of much importance in this analysis.
